I’ve completely forgotten to write about this movie. i watched it last week with some friends, and I have to say I enjoyed it immensely.
I was one of those kids who had to read the first book for school. For a whole heap of kids around my age, these were our books. Young Adult books, sure, but very very dark in some places.
The premise – A bunch of rural kids go Bush for a weekend into a remote place called “Hell”. One night they notice a whole mess of planes up in the sky, but they think nothing of it (being a public holiday). When they get back the country has been invaded by an unnamed country and their town is being locked up in the local showgrounds. Once they check all their houses and gather their wits, they know they just cant hide out in hell for the entire war – while they cant win the war, they can certainly hinder the enemy – the first book has them blowing up the only bridge into and out of town to one of their major ports where the invasion fleet is coming in.
Yes, it’s a little Red Dawn, but it works well and avoids the whole red scare that the 80s film has. Nowhere in the books is the country named at all. The author deliberately fudged facts and whatnot so NO country could be named. Even though you see the enemies in the film (and have an asian appearance) there’s a moment in the film where one of the characters go “what does it matter? they’re here now! who cares what flag they wave!” and it’s the last you hear of it..
The characters were all pretty well done, but I did have a few nitpicks. Most of the characters were far too pretty. Here’s Ellie, the main character, meant to be a farmers daughter and the actress looks like she’s never done a hard days work in her life. Robyn as well looks far too young compared with the rest of the characters as well, despite the actress giving an amazing performance. As for Fi? She’s gorgeous, her insecurities about “not being pretty” don’t work for me. I always pictured Fi being this small, quiet, tiny girl. Not pretty or ugly, but being unnoticed by most people.
The rest I’m pretty okay with. Homer was brilliant, there’s even little hints of what is to come with some of the characters. Kevin and Lee don’t get much to do in the first book, so we see Lee’s ruthlessness much earlier before the tragic events to come, and Kevin’s freak out when he’s in danger as well. Makes sense with his breakdown to come, but it also helps the character later in the film, when he drives Corrie to the hospital when she is shot, knowing he’s going to get it from the enemy.
It’s not going to be in anyone’s top 10 list of all time, but it’s a well done film. It’s got some real funny moments, some fantastic action scenes and also some sad moments. There were a few bits snipped from the book for time (the whole Hermit subplot is gone, so you only really get one sweet moment between Lee and Ellie) but worth watching and if you get to see it overseas, Watch it! It’s great to see us Aussies can still make films of this calibre. I really hope they get to make the entire book series into films..
